My fly tying journey started over 50 years ago when I took a short tying class from one of my Boy Scout parents. I was soon perusing the Herter's Catalog for all kinds of exotic materials. Within a year or so I was commercially tying trout flies for one of the local sporting goods stores. Sadly, about the time I turned 15 I discovered girls, hot cars and beer and my fly tying and fly fishing took a hiatus.
Fast forward to my early 30's, married working as an engineer and our first daughter had arrived. I had taken up fishing again several years before but had not yet gotten back into fly fishing. That was all about to change with the arrival of our first daughter!
Suddenly, our finances changed for the worse and home responsibilities greatly increased. I no longer had the time and the means to travel out to the Olympic Peninsula to fish for Steelhead and Salmon on numerous weekends. I had neither the time nor the money to do so.
Fortunately, I met a co-worker who also owned a fly shop. He made me the deal that I could tie flies for him in trade for equipment. Soon I was tying up a storm and had developed some unique patterns that were red hot in catching salmon and sea-run cutthroat off our local Puget Sound Beaches. At the peak I was tying and selling flies to 5 fly shops located near the Puget Sound.
In the late 90's we moved to San Diego and I was soon tying flies for a wider variety of saltwater species located both in and around San Diego as well as the East Cape of Baja. Soon I was also tying for a guide service called Baja on the Fly tying for everything from Marlin, Yellow-Tail, Tuna, Dorado to Roosterfish.
In 2004, we moved again to Florida. Bonefishing became my passion and the Bahamas a second home. My real focus was now bonefish flies and had also migrated to the internet thru eBay. My original store name was "FloridaFlyTyer" since that is where I was located. But since my retirement we have moved back to the Puget Sound area. So as to lessen confusion I changed both my eBay and Etsy store names to "SaltwaterFlyTyer," which is also the name for this website.
I've tied literally 10s of thousands of bonefish flies over the years. I only tie and sell what I know are effective patterns. I have also received huge amount of feedback that has helped me to refine and improve my offerings.
I should note that I will be expanding my store selection in the near future to include various baitfish, tarpon, snook and permit flies.
